What sounds like a sci-fi movie is now playing at a home near you. Are you ready?

Editor’s Note: CSCU Director of Payments Strategy, Lou Grilli, presented at the Reach Conference in November 2016 on the topic of payments, and how they are changing with the advent of the internet of things. The following is a summary of his presentation.

The internet of things (IoT) is changing payments, that is, in the IoT, payments "disappear" behind devices or become invisible. What do credit unions need to do to remain relevant in the IoT? First, it’s important to level set on what exactly IoT is.

IoT is widely misunderstood and has many different definitions. The person credited with coining the phrase, Kevin Ashton, spoke at the Payments Innovation Project earlier in 2016, and provided a thoughtful grounding to understand the concept.

Contactless debit, credit and prepaid cards - payment cards that can be used by tapping a point of sale (POS) terminal or waving the card near the terminal - have been issued by major banks around the world since 2007.  Also referred to as “tap and pay” or “tap and go,” these cards feature an embedded NFC antenna and chip (different than the EMV chip) which allows the card to exchange payment credentials to an NFC enabled terminal with just a wave or a tap. They are touted for both speed and convenience mostly because no signature or PIN is needed.  In addition, the transaction amounts using this capability are typically limited to $25 or $50, consistent with the waiving of the need for signature for mag stripe transactions for those amounts.

A common counter argument to the move toward mobile payments is that credit cards are not broken, and that swiping or inserting a credit card works perfectly fine. And those people would be right. Credit cards are not going away anytime soon.  However, subtly and surely, the plastic cards we most closely associate with payments are disappearing. Heck, there is much written about that currency will be a thing of the past in the not so distant future.  Yes, we do carry less cash than we used to, but there still are times we need to have some “real” money in hand.
