Jim McCarthy of Visa says it's possible during CSCU Annual Conference!

Technology like artificial intelligence sounds futuristic, but changes in technology move a lot faster than it seems. ATMs took 18 years to become ubiquitous. Nothing moves as quickly as it feels, but when you look back it seems like it just happened overnight. We still hear that mobile is the future, but really mobile is today – there are more mobile phones on this planet (7.19 billion) than there are humans. It won’t be long before artificial intelligence is integrated in our lives. This was the topic of a presentation by VISA Global Head of Innovation & Strategic Partnerships Jim McCarthy at CSCU’s annual conference. Jim described an example that’s already in place today - Blackrock, the world’s largest equities asset manager, is replacing human stock pickers with artificial intelligence. Fact: The number of connected devices is expected to pass 50 billion by 2020.

“Start with a device, such as a Brita filtered water pitcher, provide a power source (such as a battery), add the ability to communicate (such as Wi-Fi or Bluetooth), install a sensor (in this case, the ability for the water pitcher to measure how much water has been poured since the last time the filter was replaced), and add intelligence (in the form of a microprocessor) and you have the very definition of a connected device.” That was the explanation that Tom Davis, SVP Finance and Technology at CSCU, gave to start off his keynote session at CSCU’s recently held 2017 Annual Conference that focused on the future of payments. The Brita Infinity water pitcher is just one example of a connected device. The number of connected devices is expected to pass 50 billion by the year 2020, according to Davis.

“Things are going to change; credit unions can adapt or be left behind”. That was the message Jason Dorsey had for the over 350+ credit union attendees at CSCU’s 2017 Annual Conference. “If you don’t win in digital, there is no credit union” referring to the propensity for younger generations, millennials and Gen Z (those born since 1996) to use mobile for just about every aspect of their lives. “Opening up a new account is not exciting to a millennial”.  When attending an event, the first question a millennial asks is, “What’s the hashtag?”
