The migration to EMV, sparked by the liability shift instituted by Visa and MasterCard, was primarily about upgrading terminals at the point-of-sale (POS), as well as re-issuing credit and debit cards to combat counterfeit cards being used to make purchases at brick and mortar stores. It was widely expected that fraudsters would not go away and that fraud would materialize in other forms; primarily online or Card-Not-Present fraud.  But leave it up to the fraudsters to stay one step ahead of the good guys with an increase in fraud at ATMs.

Loyalty programs are undergoing changes on all fronts. American Express announced a new mobile app that will allow membership rewards to be used at the POS, presumably at a devalued exchange rate. Starbucks changed their long-standing rewards program by issuing “stars” based on dollar spend, rather than the number of transactions, causing some consternation among Frappuccino and Oprah Chai aficionados. The way credit and debit card issuers who offer loyalty programs view rewards is also coming under scrutiny.

In the ongoing battle against fraud, Visa recently announced that Visa card-issuing credit unions will be required to provide member cardholders with the option of transaction alerts. The mandated deadline to be in compliance is October 14, 2016.  On or before this date, credit unions must provide their Visa cardholders with the option to participate in the service.  Transaction alerts will work for transactions processed on a consumer card, excluding a non-reloadable card, and routed as follows:

The increased use of mobile for banking and shopping should come as no surprise to anyone. A barrage of stats is released weekly showing predictions and expectations for continued growth in mobile banking and online shopping sites. But, there were two stats that really stood out, and one very important factor is being lost in the noise.
